A wonderful example of an early 20th century (circa 1920) Judeo Moroccan (Fez) earthenware Pessah Sedar Plate. decorated in polychrome enamels with arabesque detail and with Arabic signature to the base. The Seder Plate is the focal point of the first two nights of Passover. The Seder tells the story of Exodus through the senses of sight, taste, and feeling. The plate traditionally has five or six items which each represent a part or multiple parts of the Passover story. This particular plate feautures six decorated 'compartments' on which would be placed:- a piece of meat generally grilled which recalls Passover, the sacrifice at the Temple.
- an egg in its shell and boiled, which recalls the sacrifice of 'haguiga and the mourning of the destruction of the Temple.
- maror, or bitter herbs, often lettuce or endives, which recall the bitterness of the life of slavery in Egypt.
- salted or vinegared water, and celery (carpas) which will be soaked in this water; it is the bitter memory of the sale of Yossef by his brothers.
- the 'harossete, excellent pastry which is always the pearl of every housewife and which is composed depending on the region of apples, almonds, cinnamon, fruits mixed in wine; this represents divine goodness. These objects are arranged on the dish in various ways according to customs and according to the elevated meanings given to these arrangements. In very good original condition with good lustre to the glaze. The only remark is a small chip to the rim (see images).
